Teaching Testimonials

Christian Brewer has all the qualities that make learning music a delight. His deep passion and love for music are infectious and he really helped me develop a discerning ear for listening to jazz.

From the very beginning of my journey with the saxophone Christian inspired me to keep going when I was too busy to practise by making me believe I had a talent worth honing and developing.

As I advanced as a player he stretched me by setting interesting challenges and suggesting pieces that he knew would improve me as a player as well as excite me musically.

As I grew more confident with the saxophone Christian encouraged me to listen attentively to my favourite improvised phrases and learn to recreate them so I developed aurally. At the same time he helped me to improve my sight reading and ability to play complicated rhythms.

Christian devoted a lot of time to helping me do well in a number of music exams as he recognised that this was something that would boost my confidence. He also invited me to watch him perform so I could see the skills he wanted me to learn in practice. In addition to seeing him as a teacher, I consider Christian to be a friend. Aisha Phoenix

I first met Christian Brewer 4 years ago when I started taking alto saxophone lessons with him as a raw beginner.

He has shown immense patience and forbearance, and given great encouragement when leading one through those early stages, when the prospect seems so daunting that one is frequently tempted to give up. He has the ability to identify one's strengths and weaknesses and help exploit the former and overcome the latter. His lessons serve to boost one's enthusiasm and constructively encourage continuing with the course.

I have to say that his skill as a teacher is based on his outstanding ability as a saxophone player. It is a privilege to be taught by such first rank musician. To find such a great musician with patience, sympathy and great teaching skill is good fortune indeed

Ash Grover – Age 14

I have been having Alto sax lessons with Mr Brewer for the last two years. His challenging style has let me make huge progress in my playing, compared to my previous teacher. I would not want to stop my lessons with him.

My 14 year old son and 11 year old daughter have lessons with Christian. I moved them both to him from their previous teachers, both of whom, I felt, were not stretching my children.

Christian has high expectations of all his pupils, and for those children who truly want to learn how to play the sax and are willing to work, he is an extremely good teacher. He is flexible in his approach, even to the extent of being open to having a dialogue with parents to ensure that everyone is pulling in the same direction.

Christian’s other great strength is that he is an extremely good sax player himself - there is nothing more inspirational for a child, than to see and listen to their teacher playing the instrument in a real world situation rather than just in the classroom.
